Dear all:

I know this is off topic, but....  

The most clear recent example of a large-scale nature of assuming you don't have to fix it if its not yet broke is New Orleans. Most of the devastation would have been entirely preventable had the engineers who KNEW that the levies wouldn't hold and the politicians who were hoping that probability would never happen had really come together to put in place an appropriate levy system.  Or, looking back even further, perhaps if proper planning had been done, building could have occurred in areas that would not have required a levy system at all.
