Hi Debbie
Women who expressed colostrum using hand expression at least 6 times daily in the first 3 days had the most milk later on.
By the end of the study, these women were producing 45% more milk than women who hand expressed less than twice a day.
Both groups used the electric breast pump with the same frequency (Massage and compressing while pumping). Rhine et al 2009, Ohyama M et al 2010. (sorry can't find full reference in my home office)
We usually start with hand expression 2 hourly on day one, then a combination of pumping (vacuum setting for mother's comfort) and hand expression for the next couple of days. Our aim is a full supply by day 10.
