My 2 cents:
My hair went from straight to very curly in my teens. To my horror I got almost
straight hair after my first pregnancy (breastfeeding was very short, just 6
weeks) and it took me almost 3 years and one desperate very short cut until it
got to the point to resemble my beloved hair to some degree.
Second pregnancy 5 years later - slightly more straight hair, but nothing very
obvious. Breastfed for almost 4 years this time, no change in hair related to
bf.
So it is likely to be old wives tales about the role of breastfeeding in the
process - but it might hold true for pregnancy.

Subject: curly hair and bf
When I got my hair cut in late first pregnancy, the stylist told me that my
curly hair would get straighter if I breastfed as she had seen that
frequently (I live in an area with a high-rate of breastfeeding). At the
time I dismissed it as a wives' tale. A few months later, I reclassified
that as wives' wisdom--indeed, my hair was much straighter during my 10
years of breastfeeding. And now has gone back to being almost as curly in
the decade since weaning. And I've heard lots of other similar anecdotes of
changing from curly to straight and vice versa...
