It sends chills down my spine to think that babies are being given formula 
without the mother's knowledge or consent!

It sure shows the influence of culture and community. Many/most of my 
friends are connected to LLL, so most of the babies I know in that way are 
exclusively breastfed to at least six months (I find many start solids later 
than that) and never have a drop of formula. Ever. But the mothers who call 
me for help, who have not had other LLL contact (that is, have not been 
attending meetings) are much more likely to say that the baby has had some 
formula, and they don't think it's a big deal.
