Jane posts: " I have done some videoing using the Calma but my
understanding is that it is against the code to have those. Am I wrong?"
Regarding the products covered by the WHO Code ... please, everyone, repeat
after me: *** Any IBCLC can talk to any mother (or colleague) about any
product, in a clinical or educational context.***
The WHO Code is about regulating and preventing unethical marketing.
It does NOT prevent sales of the four product-types covered (bottles,
teats, formula, and baby-foods-and-drinks-meant-to-replace-BF).
It does NOT prevent research on the four product-types. Heck, the only
time a health worker is allowed to accept free samples of WHO-Code-covered
products is "for the purpose of professional evaluation or research at the
institutional level." Int'l Code at 7.4
It does NOT prevent any healthcare provider (or health worker) from
discussing any product that may be germane to a mother's situation. That
is what we DO: advise women on matters affecting lactation, including their
use of products or gadgets as the situation warrants.
Indeed -- it is **preferable** that a mother learn about the benefits/risks
of using BF-related products from a healthcare provider, working with her
one-on-one, rather than from an ad or a sales person.
If an IBCLC has been undertaking research, and has videos of various kinds
of bottles being used, she may certainly use the videos in an educational
context. Assuming you have "advance written consent"from the mothers; see
IBLCE CPC 3.2.
An IBCLC CAN "have" ANY of the WHO-Code-covered products.
An IBCLC CANNOT *market* them.
