**Hi Mary,
I would like to respond to your lines below:
"Down here in the very tip of the sunshine state (Florida) where the most
heat I am feeling is not from the sun but from our communities effort to
eradicate infant unexpected sudden death by teaching healthcare people to
preach "no infants shall never ever sleep with an adult". Bang head against
the wall. And thanking you all always for being my light of sanity in a
part of the world that appears to have lost it."
**I would to tell you all something positive on this topic. A couple of
weeks ago, I finished the Dutch translation of Jim McKenna's 'Sleeping With
Your Baby', now callen 'Slapen met je baby'.
I published it myself and also did the photography to the largest extent,
because we wanted to publish the book in full colour instead of black and
white. Today was the official presentation of the book and the press
releases will be send next Monday. The one who agreed to receive the 'first'
copy out of my hands, was the neonatologist/pediatrician who wrote the Dutch
foreword, a very sweet and passionate foreword I dare say. He is such a
terrific guy and after my words and my handing him the book, he spoke to the
audience, a big group of moms meeting today because of World Breastfeeding
Week (in the Netherlands always in week 40). He said how much he appreciated
to see all these healthy babies at mom's breast and how in his ward, he is
always advocating closeness and cosleeping, because these prems have already
missed out on so much due to their early birth.
I find it so inspiring and hopeful that he, in his position, takes this
stand and actively advocates it. He says he is very happy that I so actively
advocate closeness between parents and breastfeeding instead of mother's
milk (= process instead of product). What I find truly moving is the fact
that different disciplines can mutually motivate one another to keep up the
'salmon swim against the tide'.
Like you say, Mary: we need each other's good experiences to keep our
sanity, so thumbs up for Lactnet! :o)
Bye,
Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands (and tired but happy with 17 books
sold today, so 17 moms who can spread the word about the 'evidence based'
(ahum... hahaha) importance of closeness)
