I'm with you there, Amy. I agree that we don't want our profession to be
to US centric or too medicalized. There's a balance between being able
to help babies and moms breastfeed when they have medical challenges,
and turning the beautiful symbiosis of breastfeeding into a clinical
transfer of nutrients and immunities from breast to mouth. I like to see
us have sufficient medical knowledge to be able to do no harm, recognize
when infants and mothers are having problems that present red flags
about their health and refer appropriately, and yet still keep respect
for the value, robustness and beauty of the process of breastfeeding.
Most of my presentations and books focus on helping moms and babies
overcome challenges, but I hope the theme that babies are smart and
capable and moms are wise and breastfeeding is far more than just food
comes through as well.
