Regarding the woman on Cipro for a MRSA breast infection- Cipro is
absolutely NOT an appropriate treatment for MRSA infection. The options
tend to be Clindamycin, TMP sulfa, or linezolid. Cipro doesn't even
cover a staph infection that is methacillin sensitive.
I would advise her to question her doctor about this.
She should be treated for as long as she has any pain, breast and
nipple. Often these are in the interstitial tissue AND in the ducts. If
the infection is in the ducts she will have classic 'yeast' pain with
burning, sharp stabbing or conversely dull aching, and nipple sensitivity.
Assuming that her infection is in the ducts based on having pus coming
from her nipples, she would probably need at least 6-8 weeks of
antibiotic tx.
