Dear Nikki,
It is harsh, but is it judgment? Isn't is it just a (for many) inconvenient truth? I truly think that the truth should be out there for everyone and that we need a little less of the ''breastfeeding is a personal choice''-message. For the child to be breastfed or not can change his complete health-future and this should not be considered a personal choice for the parents, just like using a car seat or safe sleeping arrangements should be personal life-style choices.
In the total of health-message campaigning breastfeeding is the only topic where ''not being harsh'' is a consideration. People really, really need to realize that formula feeding is not even pan B, but plan D (only after direct breastfeeding, feeding mom's milk otherwise, feeding other human milk).
Warmly,
Gonneke, IBCLC in PP, LC lecturer

Dear Lactnet Friends:
How to keep harsh judgement out of teaching?
Exclusively formula fed babies grow up to be less intelligent with smaller
brains. How to say that in a way that keeps the door open to change? And
yet, it has to be said that way because it is the other view of Kramer's
research; saying that breastfed babies are smarter with bigger brains
assumes that formula-feeding is the norm.
I apologize for my harsh statement in my previous post.
warmly,
