Does anyone have any research on the safety of human milk for a 6 year
old with stage 4 sarcoma? Mom is bf her toddler brother and is happy to
express for her, but is getting resistance from the hospital staff. They
are equating her milk with unpasteurized animal milk, and are concerned
about infection since the child is neutropenic.
I of course shared hygeine information (hand washing, kit and pump
sanitizing, and staff handwashing and container washing to avoid
contaminating the milk).
I know there was a discussion a few years ago on fears of graft versus
host disease from breast milk in immunodeficient kids. I found no
mentions of this issue since the 80's, and only then in the context of
severe combined immunodeficiency. Anyone who has expertise or more
recent research on the issue, I'd be happy to have it to share with this
mom.
