Dear Karleen
Thank you so much for your comment about Hatteras Island. I am a home owner
there who is currently evacuated from the island. It is very difficult to
get any information in or out of the island at this point. The residents
are completely cut off from the mainland as the road has been washed out is
several places. There has only been an emergency ferry to bring in some
supplies.
However, many of the residents are still without power (power lines run
along the destroyed highway), which is the reason communication is difficult.
And the reason breastfeeding is so important right now.
I did receive an appeal for some supplies which a boat will take from the
northern part of the island to the south. Formula was not on the request,
thank goodness.
This island has a small population (very few babies) and hope of support
and relief are very slim. Government officials are even arguing about
whether the road should be rebuilt at all.
Fortunately, both of my grandchildren are breastfeeding as we wait and hope
for a return to the island.
I will try to learn more when and if I can
