Help needed please.
I will be meeting with a mother who wishes to relactate for her child (about
18 months old). She stopped breastfeeding as she was pregnant (due to
family pressure). I don't know how long ago the last breastfeed was.
I will see what I find during the consult. In the meanwhile I have been
doing some thinking about the possibility of using galatogogues in
pregnancy.
Domperidone is Pregnancy risk category C (Medication and Mothers' Milk -
Hale 2010). Metoclopramide is Pregnancy risk category B, but it should not
be expected to work as a galatogogue when prolactin levels are high (as in
pregnancy).
I suppose a lot will depend on how willing the toddler is to breastfeed -
maybe an SNS? What are her chances of inducing lactation while pregnant?
Many thanks
