Neonatal units all over this country are routinely mixing formula into breast milk as a fortifier. This is due to some research which says that preterm baby's growth is restricted when not fortified with more protein. My question is: does anyone know the long-term implications of this? Are babies fed only human milk at a disadvantage later on in life in performance of human activities? And this begs the question: what is the measure of a successful human being in our society? The number of BMW's, the number of degrees, number of marriages, children, friends, nervous breakdowns, use of anti-depressants, high blood pressure, number of people at your funeral? I guess I'm getting old and tired. But Steven Covey says: Begin with the end in mind. What is the end we are seeking when we birth a baby, choose the method of parenting or feeding? I am not a new-ager or an atheist, I am very conservative. But how do we value human life and how does that affect all of our decisions? I think that it is so important to try to convey to my clients that being a mother is the most important role they will ever have and that breastfeeding is one of the foundation blocks - but not the only one.

Since powder is not sterile it is not recommended for babies under 1 month of age. Be sure and let the hospital legal team know about this improper pharm suggestion :-( Pat in SNJ
