According to Dr.Hale's Medications and Mother's Milk, if a mother were given prednisone ( which is a steroid like cortisone), the American Academy of Pediatrics says it is usually compatible with breastfeeding, and Dr. Hale has rated it "L2", which means it is considered "safer".  This means that some studies have been done, and the risk to the baby is remote--basically because only small amounts of most corticosteroids are secreted into breastmilk--even with doses up to 120mg per day.

So, as others have suggested, the problem most likely stems from a different source.  And as others have implied, the skin-to-skin that occurs with breastfeeding has been shown to reduce cortisone levels in both the mother and the baby.
