I tell moms that when I had my first, I asked my midwife how I would know if
the baby was latched on or was just mouthing the nipple. She told me that
it would feel like a baby elephant (she spent most of her time in Asia!)
No matter what a mom and dad have done between them, she will never have
felt anything quite like this, and she may not know whether to call it pain,
tenderness, stretching, or something else. That said, I note that if it
crosses the line into toe curling, foot tapping/stomping, or blinking back
tears, it's no longer normal and definitely something to phone me about.
