Dear Lactnetters,
I loved Melissa's essay and after reading the comments I feel I must
share this with you.
In Hungary, the paid maternity leave is 3 years. The mother receives 70%
of her average salary for 2 years and a certain amount for another 1
year. If she has 3 or more children she can stay at home until the
youngest is 8 years old and get paid. This amount is not much but
certainly more than nothing and we feel important and appreciated
officially in our roles as mothers.
Now it is about to change. The current government wants to reduce the
time of paid maternity leave to 1 year and wants to support day care
centers. We are not happy about it and as we are having the elections
this month we are hoping for the new government to not touch something
that has been working well for decades.
Warmly,
Ibolya Eva Rozsa, LLLL, IBCLC
