Nikki shares that a mom wrote:
' "Earlier bedtime, carb loading and crying it out worked for us. She used
to love the pre-dawn wake up but has given it up and now sleeps 12+ hours
at night!!!"
So sad. What is this baby learning?'
~~~
That carbs are the answer to loneliness?
Ah the American way...
I often feel insane, thinking this way - like I live on this planet where
I am an alien who uses a different language and has different culture. This
mom obviously thinks her baby is learning how to sleep in a healthy way.
Loving waking up before dawn to greet the day and have some time with her
family before things get more hectic is seen as a habit to "give up" like
smoking or chewing one's nails to the quick? That's a knee jerk reaction from
me, admittedly. I don't know how old this child is, nor the social or
medical issues of this family. I know moms who suffer from depression need
sleep, and sometimes a lot of uninterrupted sleep. I know I have a visceral
reaction I cannot control when I hear the phrase "cry it out" touted as a
strategy needed for all babies to sleep "well". I look around at the obesity of
our population and think "oh here is where it can start". And I cringe when
I hear "carb loading" applied to ANY child, especially as a way to shut a
child down for 12 hours. Is sleeping now treated like a 1980s marathon,
where one loads on pasta up for the marathon of sleep? How many things are
going wrong here...
Just knowing other people on this list are also potentially my alien commun
ity at large is a little help...
Peace,
Judy
