Health Canada is conducting an open online consultation on the draft
statement: Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants - Recommendations from Birth
to Six Months. The statement contains evidence-informed recommendations to
assist health professionals in communicating consistent guidance on infant
nutrition to Canadian parents and caregivers.

The Draft Statement and a comment form is online.  The deadline for comments
is Feb 3, 2011, so this is a very short timeline.  

 

I would think that this would be of interest to both Canadians and
Americans, as well as persons from elsewhere.   We recently saw the Health
Canada advisory on milk sharing, quoted in the US media reports, as well as
in the Milk Bank meetings that were held in Washington in December.  So I do
think one country's recommendations affect the other.

 

 

(BTW - this document seems to imply that if breastfeeding isn't working, the
next alternative is commercial formula, as it makes no mention of milk
banking, let alone informed peer-to-peer milk sharing.  The document spends
considerable space discussing formula additives and Vitamin D, so one would
think they could address these also.  I believe INFACT Canada and other
breastfeeding groups/experts are preparing their comments and perhaps can
provide some leadership.  I would like to support and facilitate other
breastfeeding moms/groups to comment, so that Health Canada realizes there
is much interest/support to improve these recommendations over their draft
document.)
