Dear wise ones,

Thank you all again, so much, for the replies.

Weight gain was within normal limits. This baby had spent a few days in NICU, and was having difficulty going to breast. Parents were supplementing with straight formula "at night" so baby would "sleep" (Oy. That's another post altogether.)

I DID NOT tell them to stop doing what the MD told them to, and I told them why. Because I am not allowed to go against an MD's instructions. I made it very clear to them that I was concerned about this practice and that I intended to call the pedi and confirm his instructions. I also informed the parents that I would spend the weekend researching the issue. I also reminded them, gently, that mom had an abundance of breastmilk and that was perfect for baby. Species specificity, etc. I believe the parents saw my side of things, but if they discontinued the practice, it was of their own volition. (I hope they did.) Baby and mom are going in for a re-check with my colleague today, and I've armed her with all of this info as well. I will address the pedi once I'm back in the office tomorrow.
