A couple of years ago I had the good fortune to be able to attend a presentation by the awesome Catherine Watson Genna. She explained the reason why babies with tongue-tie may gape poorly - something to do with the various attachments to the hyoid bone. I got the concept but find I don't have the details enough to be able to explain to physicians just why this happens. Catherine - are you out there?! Anyone else able to help me out here? I do see it repeatedly: release of posterior tongue tie = full gape and, of course, deeper latch.
