Here I go again on another nutrition question. Aida asked if breastmilk is
in fact missing any crucial nutrients. According to Nutrition During
Lactation, regardless of what the mom eats, to ensure adequate nutrition for
the BF infant, they recommend all newborns receive a 0.5 - 1.0 mg injection
or a 1.0-2.0 mg oral dose of vit K immediately after birth regardless of
feeding method.
If exposure to sunlight appears to be inadequate (< 30 min. exposure to
sunlight/week in a diaper or 2 hrs/week if fully clothed w/o a hat),
supplement with 5-7.5 mcg of vit. D.
Provide Fl supplement to BF infants IF Fl content of drinking water is less
than <0.3 ppm.
When BFing is complemented by other foods and by 6 mos. of age, in any case,
the infant should be given food rich in bioavailable iron or a daily
low-dose oral iron supplement.
I think we need to keep in mind, is that it can take a long time, sometimes
years, dependent upon the nutrient, for a deficiency to develop. I opt for
the safe side.
My VERY humble opinion.
