My name is Karla Lewis. I am the Breastfeeding Coordinator at the
Morrisania WIC Program in the Bronx, NY. About 80% of our mothers are
Hispanic and a big portion of the rest is West African. We've tried
every which way to have support groups for mothers and have found that
mothers simply don't come, even when they have a relationship with their peer
counselor. BUT the good news is we have stumbled across something that
works pretty well. We now have breastfeeding baby playgroups. Mother
will come so their baby will be happy and have fun. We lay out our
rugs and blow up inflatable balls. The babies crawl after the bawls,
they lay on the rug for tummy time, we've even done a little baby yoga. Mothers talk to each other and the
peer counselors engage them on the floor. We talk about what to expect in the coming weeks, how's breastfeeding going, and whatever else is on the mom's minds. In the end we have a prize
table with gifts for them to pick from. We have breastfeeding shawls,
bibs, etc. It lasts about an hour. The mother love it!!!! We had tried everything before!
This is working! And we haven't even had food. So far we have several
repeat mothers and mothers we didn't even call to remind. They come
without any sort of WIC checks attached to the group. Its great fun.

Subject: support groups
I am currently working as the LC for a low-income population of women
(all WIC, 80% Hispanic). Most of them do not have any transportation. I
really want to put together a support group, they have tried this in the
past with little success.
Our budget isn't too great, so having lots of food and things of that
nature is not an option. My plan is to send out invites to all our PN
and PP moms, I would also include invites in the gift bags we give when
we do rounds. Lastly, I was thinking that all our peer counselors could
remind moms of the group on all phone contacts with patients.
Also, we have a choice to do the group at our office, the hospital, or
at the pedi centers...I am thinking the pedi office because they will be
there anyway.
Any suggestions to make this group more appealing as well as ideas for
how to make the invites look would be greatly appreciated.
