Hi Cathy,

Like you say: this case doesn't seem to be caused by germs, because the mom 
also heals without taking antibiotics.
We had the ultrasound taken a day or two days after the symptoms were at its 
most severe, but the radiologist found NOTHING strange.
The breast was completely quiet on the inside: no funny spots, no clogging, 
no severely extended ducts, nothing.
Like I said... I was pretty disappointed. I really hoped we would have found 
something that could be solved.
The radiologist said the mom could be relieved, because also nothing malign 
was found and that was reassuring indeed.
Then again... it didn't bring us any closer to solving the problem.
The radiologist is pretty young and she treated my lc-colleague for her 
breast cancer.
She is very pro-breastfeeding, so I think she might be able to do another 
check if necessary.
Point is... what should we ask her to look for...? Symptoms often come up in 
the evening... when the lady is not there.
It would be good if symptoms came up during the day and we could go straight 
away.
I am SO curious what could be seen then and if it is something internal or 
mainly a reaction of the skin, turning bright red.
I hope Trevor Smith will come up with something... ;-)

There are a few exotic types of mastitis that don't really seem to be
caused by germs and are very difficult to treat, and there are exotic
germs that can cause mastitis that are insensitive to common
antibiotics. This mom's experience is very suspicious. Do you have a
curious young physician around who might be willing to do some cultures
and some digging around in the literature?
