Dear Friends:

Reading so many thoughtful, collegial and articulate posts, for which I am
grateful, makes me wonder: Do pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding fit into a
factory model? We advocates keep struggling and trying to figure out ways to
get the round peg into the square hole.

Is the babies that are the problem? Or is the hospitals?

Is it the mothers that are the problem? Or is it obstetrical practices?

Is it the people that are the problem? Or is it the corporate mindset that
puts profit above all else?

I purchased several sections of the infant food and formula industry's June
edition of "Baby Foods and Infant Formula: A Global Business Report." In it,
industry identifies pollutants in infant formulae (aluminum, GE ingredients,
phytoestrogens, silicon and MSG. These ingredients do not have to be listed
on the label. Industry says that aluminum levels in the common formulas are
40 times higher than those in human milk and that there is a chance that
this aluminum may end up in the baby's brain. They know what they are
doing....and yet ask for and receive support from governments (i.e. the WIC
program).

What will it take for humans to use evidence to benefit their young? The
truth of what works is easy to find; we have tons of great research, the
Cochrane Collaborative, and outspoken advocates. Yet the juggernaut rolls
on.......

feeling very sad today.......
