This is an important conversation because there is so much misinformation out there. One of my great joys is the LLL Toddler Meeting I have been leading for about 12 years. This topic comes up but it is not warranted.
From personal experience and from that of observing families for many years I have seen older children model attachment. My own family have brought the toddler over to me to say he needs you mama.
Certainly it can be what is the focus in a rocky relationship - but it does not cause the problems.

Good luck with this doctor. I can't wait to hear in a couple of years that this doc may actually recommend breastfeeding beyond a year!
