Dear Whole Foods:
I have had a complaint from a Whole Foods customer that she was told to stop breastfeeding in the store. When she explained that this order was in violation of California Civil Code, she was told it was Whole Foods policy to have mothers stop breastfeeding if anyone complained. I know this employee must have been trying to sound official, but obviously it cannot be store policy to break the law and dismiss customers' civil rights. Since this is World Breastfeeding Week, it would be timely to send out a memo to all employees stating your support for breastfeeding and clarifying that your policy is to tell anyone who complains that Whole Foods supports breastfeeding wholeheartedly.
I look forward to your response. I am available for inservices at Whole Foods in my area.
Arly Helm, MS, IBCLC
