Hi Ginger
Please note that although there are no IBCLCs at your WIC clinics now,
they are being encouraged. The National WIC Association Strategic Plan
recommends IBCLCs at WIC clinics and encourages training for staff to prepare for
the exam.
Over 50% of the babies born in the US are eligible for the WIC program.
There is great potential for providing follow up care for WIC breastfeeding
mother through the WIC program.
So although it is not there where you are now, it is coming! For example
in Indiana we have 65 IBCLCs working for the WIC program with approximately
30 more sitting for the exam this summer. For 63 local agencies, Indiana
will have 95 IBCLCs. We are working hard dto make these services available to
our mothers.
