That is a very old saying, not sure how you could determine who said it 
first. Dr Gene Cranston Anderson has some very interesting articles on 
crying and physical harm to the neonate.  I think I first heard Dr White (of 
LLLI fame) say it several decades ago :-)  Pat in SNJ
