Need some advice for a mom. Baby is 8 weeks old. Last week baby was
diagnosed with silent reflux and treated with Zantac. Mom reported
baby was doing much better on medication. Before treatment she
reported constant fussiness and need to nurse constant. This morning
baby "projectile vomited", Mom took baby to doctor. Doctor diagnosed
an allergy to milk and soy, noted blood in urine, low weight gain, and
intestine inflammation. Of course, doctor wants mom to quit
breastfeeding and put baby on nutramigen formula. Mom is very
reluctant due to cost and knows breastmilk is best. She called to ask
me, "if she was killing her baby by nursing." How do I go against
what the doctor recommends? Of course, if this was me I would change
my diet and continue breastfeeding. But what do I suggest to this
mom? Do any of you know of creditable websites I can suggest to mom
about changing her diet?
Other random info: Mom has 2 other older children that had similar
problems with reflux. I done a weight check over the weekend baby
weighed 8lb 10oz, which was a 10 oz gain from previous weight check 2
weeks ago. Mom asked this weekend about green poops states he hasn't
had yellow poops. Mom is nursing 10 to 15 minutes on each breast.
Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful! Thanks so much!!
