I used to do follow-up phone surveys. There were so many moms who weaned
very early, with problems that could have been helped. There was free help
via the USA WIC breastfeeding program, and thru our bf center. The WIC LC or
peer counselor will make home visits. The ones I have worked with in
Mississippi are very dedicated. I would ask if they called for help, most
said no. Unfortunately many were going back to work, and saw that as a
reason they would have to stop bf anyway. It was very frustrating to me,
because we could have helped them. I am sure anyone can react to fenugreek
in any way, but I firmly beleive that the mom was destined to dry up early,
with first day regular use of supplemental formula bottles. She was at the
very end of involution when she began the fenugreek, it could not turn
things around by that point. But mom associated it with the final
involution. Some moms think they can take fenugreek, but don't realize it
has to be used in conjunction with effective and frequent milk removal by bf
or expressing. I'm sure she will not change her belief about the fenugreek,
but I am convinced it was not a factor. A problem is that she may tell other
moms not to try it because it will dry her up, and so they may not contact a
bf counselor. These situations are very hard, we come upon them often where
a mom will say I just couldn't bf because of ABC, my mom couldn't and my
sister couldnt' etc. Some of these may be PCOS or something, but still they
CAN bf with the proper help!
