Pediatricians push provinces to open milk banks

Pasteurized breast milk donated from nursing mothers can save the lives of premature babies when their own mothers can't produce enough milk, say the nation's pediatric experts, who are urging provinces to consider opening human milk banks.
Studies have found breast milk is the best option when feeding newborn babies because it offers numerous benefits -- from improved development to healthy growth patterns, and lower rates of both infection and sudden infant death syndrome, said Dr. Sharon Unger, pediatrician and author of a Canadian Paediatric Society statement being published today that supports milk banking.
