Harvesting stem cells from cord blood is not the focus of Lactnet. The main risks to babies from premature division or clamping of the umbilical cord are hypovolemia with accompanying complications such as respiratory distress, and anemia in childhood. It seems iron was not meant to be acquired through diet at this stage of life, and babies whose cords were cut before they stopped pulsating have lower hematocrits at one year than babies who experienced a physiologic cessation of circulation in the cord. This puts the recommendation for introduction of solids under the guise that babies need the dietary iron in a different light. Apart from that, cord clamping and what we do with the blood really is off topic for this list. We'll be grateful if future discussion is done in private e-mails.

Thanks
