I have been consulting a 30 year old first time mother, with a 13 week old baby boy, who has a consistent low supply.
She has given me permission to post (PTP) to see if we can find an answer.
Mother desparately want to continue to feed baby, and also next child, however is now having to supplement due to constant weight loss in child.
Child is at 50 percentile, and weighs just over 6kg and is 58cm in length
Mother had a normal vaginal delivery with a 6 hour labour at 40 + 5 days gestation, mother given pethidine due a 3rd degree tair, baby 3900kg @ birth lost >12% and was also jaundiced, given formula by hospital staff at 3 days as lost more weight - day 4 put under lights for jaundice.
Mother has also been to a clinic - stayed for 5 nights, and came out using a supplemental nurser system (SNS).
This clinic did test weighs over a 48 hour period and told the mother that she was only producing 300ml per day, and to continue to give formula at the breast via the SNS
Mother has none of the red flags usually associated with lack or low supply (not obese, no diabetes, no theca lucin cysts, no retained product, has well developed breast tissue, mother felt the normal changes in the breast during pregnancy, etc)
mother is fit and healthy, parents live in a rural area and eat variety of meat, grains & home grown furit & veg
Baby is only fed via a bottle if out of the home (maybe 1-2 per week), as difficult to feed in public using SNS
Mother continuing to take motilium as prescribed, and also fenugreek
Baby attaches well at the breast with or without the SNS
Mother is well and baby also - no medical problems for either since birth.
Parents are average weight & build
Baby doing all normal milestones, longest sleep is 5 hours, having 7 feeds per day, settles well, happy & content.
Any suggestions on what this may be
Mother has also asked if there is anything else she coud do - also wants to know if accupuncture has been helpful in this situation.
Thanks in anticipation.

Kind Regards
