Posting with permission. I have a client who moved to the Pittsburgh PA area, and
has seen multiple LCs without getting an explanation for her near-absent milk.
No retained placenta, normal delivery, normal bloodwork, no history of medical
problems or breast surgery. Baby is at the breast a lot (using an SNS). She
does not have classic PCOS, but I suspect something along those lines because
she is obese and told me that over the past decade, as she gained weight her
cycles lengthened to 35+ days. She also has a very low BBT (she has charted for
years, and says she has to adjust the temp numbers because she is so much lower
than typical) and for that reason suspects a thyroid issue, though her bloodwork
came out normal. She sought out a doc on the list of Broda Barnes Research
Foundation, but he was not taking new patients.
Her OB was not helpful, and would not prescribe metformin or domp, and suggested
only an MRI to rule out tumors. I've suggested some herbs meanwhile, and an
endocrine workup by someone familiar with hard-to-diagnose thyroid problems, but
I am not in the area. I'd like to give her names of a local IBCLC, a
milk-familiar herbalist, and a thyroid-familiar doc.
