<<So the US system forces a woman with child to choose between the child having a mom or having healthcare? May I find this barbaric and highly uncivilised?>>
The US MILITARY system forces a mother to make this decision. I don't think one can say that every employer in the US puts a mother in this position; although since healthcare is tied to one's job here (a very odd concept for me to grasp, being from Canada), if a mother chooses not to return to work she is out of healthcare or has to get something called Cobra which is very expensive, from what I understand. I think it is safe to say that the maternity leave policy and healthcare system of the US is not ideal for the breastfeeding mother whether she's in the military, working for a large firm or at Walmart.
