Thyroid.about.com is actually a pretty solid place to start. It has all the
usual medicalized stuff, but then a very broad range of info, because the
"guide" who wrote much of it was one of those people who are not well-served
by synthetic replacement of T4 only, and she had to do some major work to
get good treatment. Lots and lots of links to follow from there!
I actually trust "my" doctor, so I read extremely broadly, from mainstream
to some people I don't really respect much, and everywhere in between, and
then with my brain quite full, I went to the doc and we sorted through it
all together.
My particular trouble was caused by pretty serious fear-based stress for
about three years. Yep, you can kill off your own thyroid. After seeing
the multiple effects of bad stress in my own life as a rational adult, it
makes me even more upset about people who continually stress their helpless
babies for the sake of convenience.
