We wait 24 hours before we discuss supplementing. If we're nervous before
that, we might have mom hand express into a spoon. (Most moms seem to
express colostrum before they ever see us - very interesting and very
handy!)
If you supplement too soon, you jeopardize the cluster feeds that we (at
least) see around 20-24 hours with first babies. If people are nervous we
have them do skin to skin.
The old nurses still remember the days when babies weren't given any thing
at all for 24 hours.
Hyupoglycemia concerns, we hand express and feed if baby is not interested
in the breast.
