For her, I would suggest that she be sure which infection she has, whether it be fungal, bacterial, or both. I suspect Staph A on her nipples, and perhaps treatment with antibiotics to treat that would help,...Jack Newman's APNO cream topically, and/or Gentian Violet, applied as per Jack Newman MD' protocol at www.drjacknewman.com. Herbs are not my first choice of treatment for true mastitis, although if it worked for her, I am glad. There are numerous articles that state that sore, open nipples are really usually staPh Aureus repositories, and in any case, 2 tabs of Diflucan, or bullet doses, would not cure ductal thrush if she had it.
Good positioning, treating her breasts and nipples topically, and then perhaps systemically as well, in addition to treating the baby if thrush is involved, would be my first line of defense.
