Dear Friends:
I imagine that the mother who received (thank you Kathleen Gale):
"1. Mothers need hands on practice and return demonstration of the 5 S's on
a
one-on-one basis.
2. Mothers need to be taught feeding and satiation cues. It seems that
when a
mother learns the 5 S's, and does not learn about feeding cues, that
newborns
may not be fed as often as they need to be fed, instead, they are swaddled.
3. Thirdly, I teach my mothers that their babies need skin-to-skin, and
what
the amazing benefits of STS are. Swaddling can interfere with that if it is
used all the time. So, I tell them to make sure the baby is not showing
feeding
cues, make sure they get skin-to-skin, and when all of that has happened,
then
swaddling is useful, helpful, and
beneficial."...................................................
wouldn't have very much need for the 5 Ss!
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
