I will add though, that even if these tongue tied adults are obviously
making their speech sounds in a different manner and with different tongue
placement than a non-tongue tied individual most SLPs would not consider this
a speech disorder. If the production *sounds* correct it is correct no
matter how it was actually made.

It's all about function, well sort of...:)
This reminds me of a family I worked with for both their little girls.
First baby tongue tied, released. Second baby tongue tied, released even
sooner. ( Mom called me during LLL conference within minutes of second baby being
born. Things were better than first postpartum experience, since this one
would latch and it wasn't excruciating, but still ended up being an issue
to be dealt with.) Parents knew the issue and wanted to deal with it
earlier. Interesting part: both parents had some restrictions themselves, both
spoke functionally. BUT: the dad remarked that kids thought he was stupid
when he was younger because he kept quiet a lot of the time, and when he did
speak, he spoke slowly. He also said that he did a lot of oral presentations
at work and suffered from real fatigue and jaw pain. SO, even though he
knew this and considered having the release done himself, nothing was done,
but with second baby, the ENT suggested he get his released as well. He was
ready emotionally, it seems. Well, voila! Within hours he said his wife
could understand him so much better, and his jaw fatigue and pain were
history. He was functioning "fine" but there was so much room for improvement even
so. I was really happy for all 4 of them...:)
Peace,
Judy
