Norway
where milk donors are compensated for their time on a per liter basis, and
blood donors are rewarded with great trinkets like Moomintroll coffee cups
or bath towels or sports bags, and the costs of supplying blood and donor
milk to those who need them are borne collectively by the human fellowship
we call 'society' over the public health budget, and nobody is in any
serious doubt about the value of either fluid
~~ I'm still not getting posts with subject line anymore but tried to match
what I figured it was... As per blood donation where I live: In the past 6
or 7 years, I've given over 3 gallons of blood to my local hospital. (
Except for this coming year, when I can't give, having gotten tattooed with my
daughter when she turned 18). They have a Four Seasons donor program where
healthy people are encouraged to donate once in each season. I've gotten
little seasonal pins, a lunch bag or two, some fleece throws, mugs, a book
gift card to the nearby bookstore, movie tickets ( when you donate near your
birthday), and a few times "A Pint for a Pint" meaning a pint of locally
made ice cream or sorbet, two cheap but not bad music CDs and two Tshirts
the size of tents. They do a once-yearly luncheon where donors are honored,
collectively and as they pass each gallon marker. I consider this a
community service. The little things are nice but not necessary. If the hospital
was turning around and selling if for profit I think I would feel
differently. I figure we are way behind on actually compensating moms for milk
donations, perhaps someone will correct me.
Peace,
Judy
