Dear Friends:

The classic study done by Dr. Mennella that showed babies take in less
alcohol in the feed after the mother has drunk some had 12 babies in it. 12
is not a statistically significant sample; only 11 babies took less while
the 12th took more!! Why this study is used to justify scaring women into
feeding formula (which is usually what happens in my community) is beyond
me.

Dr. Ruth Little looked at babies up to a year of age and found a very slight
(1-point difference) on one of the Bayley scales.......and was unable to
replicate that finding when she repeated the study and followed babies out
to 18 months.

In local drugstores, women can buy something to check their milk alcohol
levels........what a rip-off!

If she's drinking too much, she won't be a safe mother. If a mother under
the influence of alcohol falls asleep on the same surface with her baby, the
chances of that baby dying go up. That's the public health message we want
to disseminate!

warmly,
Nikki Lee
