Susan Berger wrote: "Saying it is dessert is just another made up rule. And given that there is a childhood obesity epidemic, I would never label breast milk with a term that could be interpreted as contributing to childhood obesity."  She makes several excellent points in her post.  In the inpatient setting of a children's hospital, I see the ill effects of the "rules" that are either wives tales, medical professionals, mother to mother support or just a great suggestion that is not working for this particular mother baby pair.  I almost always suggest that they keep a log of breastfeeds, wet and stool diapers, weights from PCP office and spit ups/emesis if needed.
