When I started out helping mothers a favourite thing to suggest to
mothers with damaged nipples was salt soaks followed by a dab of whatever
cooking oil you had around the place. I think the explanation was that it
was a v milk antiseptic, mothers used salt soaks on tears too to prevent
infection. In Britain at least there was a spray called rotersept which
again was suposed to help sore nipples and prevent mastitis - although
some thought the cold on the nipple of the spray was what really helped
I don't remember hearing about infected nipples then, perhaps they just
weren't diagnosed. Does anyone who has been around for a long time know if
the incidence of infected nipples has increased? Just a thought
As for getting ill by getting cold, perhaps the reasoning behind
thinking that it brings on illness is that if you are coming down with
something, and you get really cold, you are perhaps more likely to
succumb, specially if you are suboptimaly nourished or inadequately
clothed as many of our forbears were. People knew that you got chilblains
from the cold, as well as cracked painful skin, and frostbite, and cold
sores etc,Samuel Pepys suffred agonies with the stone after drinking cold
water when it was cold, and in fiction Black Beauty was made ill by being
given cold water to drink when overheated , so logical to think that
perhaps you got other things from cold as well.
