As a family doctor, I recommend vitamin D for all ages, young and old. I
occasionally find that people notice insomnia when taking vitamin D
before bedtime, and some (adult) people complain of moodiness when
taking relatively higher doses of vitamin D, ie than 2000 units daily.
We know that vitamin D is very important for mental health, the most
obvious benefit being reduction in the winter blues. Given that it has
some effects on the brain, I can imagine that we will find some babies,
like adults, not feeling quite right on a vitamin D supplement. I never
have liked recommending 1 dose for everyone, since people are so different.
For this baby, I would suggest decreasing the vitamin D supplement to
200 units a day and see how the baby does.
