I would not make too much of this if I didn't have to, unless it is actively
causing problems for the mothers and babies. I am guessing that you are
getting some calls from moms who are asking you to verify or clarify the
doc's advice. I am also guessing that s/he is giving that advice after a mom
has asked said doc or complained to said doc about frequent and/or lengthy
bf sessions. What I would say in response to a call I got like that, would
be something like this:
"Oh, that is a ballpark estimate of a pattern that some babies would take
with their feedings, once he's got established with breastfeeding. We have
to remember that each baby and mom are individual and need to establish
their own rhythm and supply and demand system. We have to go with what our
own baby needs, or we will mess up the system, and that can change daily.
Are you having concerns about how your baby is feeding?"
I would also try my best to keep a good relationship with the doc and his
patients, and also try to make sure that the doc knows how to and trusts
referring to me. So when mom approaches the doc with concerns, he refers her
to me.
