Bile salts give the stool it's color. Babies with biliary atresia 
(failure of the bile ducts to form correctly) have clay colored stools.

The darker stools of adults or formula fed babies are probably caused by 
different bacteria working on the bile salts while they are still in the 
intestines. Steve Buescher gave an amazing talk at the LATCH conference 
this week on the perfect pre and probiotic functions of human milk!
