She needed someone to assess the latch, something was going on to cause so
much pain and damage.  Possibilities could be short frenulum (tongue
tie) shallow latch, improper positioning.  Also, what kind of pump was she
using?  She may have needed larger flanges if she wasn't getting good
drainage during pumping. A hospital grade or rental grade pump is the best
for around the clock pumping.  Lecithin is helpful for moms who experience
frequent plugged ducts.  However, the plugged ducts are a sign of baby and
pump not doing a good job of draining the breast.  I'd definitely encourage
this mom to re-lactate.  Hope she is able to find some local help ASAP :)
