Apologies for not responding to this sooner, I put it to one side to
answer later! Am now ploughing through a pile of 'to do' stuff.
The handout that I'm sure you're referring too, as I'm sure I sent it to
you Phyllis, is a Nursing Matters handout prepared for NM by Pamela
Morrison. It is 9 pages long, and was written to support a Mum who was
in trouble with UK NHS services, as they claimed baby was being underfed
at the breast, and wished to force formula supplementation under threat
of Child Protection procedures. To combine it with another thread, the
Mum decided to use donated milk rather than formula, and turned up to
see the Child Protection Paeditrician with both the handout, and the
blood screening resuls of her two donors. The handout both gives
information and advice on findinf the cause of low weight gain, and
gives strategies for dealing with it whilst preserving breastfeeding
where possible.
All was deemed well with this dyad, in the end. :-)
The handout has been the single most requested resource I have, and
anyone can have a copy of it, and pass it on, as long as it cites Pamela
as the source. Anyone wanting a copy, just email me.
As an aside, Pamela is probably updating the handout, prior to her
giving a 90 minute special presentation on Low Weight Gain & The
Exclusively Breastfed Infant, at the upcoming LLL GB National
Conference, in October 2011, here in the UK. So I'm sure she'll be
happy to receive any feedback from those who have used the said
handout. The conference is concentrating on infection and breastfeeding
hence Marian Tompson being the keynote speak with her "Another Look" hat
on, as she'll be discussing HIV & breastfeeding. This is, of course,
why Pamela is also speaking - on HIV & Breastfeeding in the UK. But if
you've got her in one place, and this handout is so popular and so
useful, go for two bangs for one buck. :-)
As the instigator for the handout, I'd also be grateful for anyfeedback
on how Health Professionals react to it, when a Mum or a supporter,
hands it over. So far, the reaction has been pretty positive, no doubt
due to Pamela's professionalism in citing the research, so completely,
and so clearly.
But if anyone simply wants a copy - email me. :-)

(Not sure what hat she has on) :-)
