There is not enough protein, calcium or phosphorus in human milk to meet
the needs of a 32 week, SGA premie. I also doubt this infant is capable of
transferring the 180-250 mL/kg/day of breastmilk needed for the other
nutrients. I have my neonatal dietician calculate the protein needs for EACH
infant, then have Mom breastfeed ad lib, but add between 1-3 feeds of
enriched artificial milk (NeoSure or EnfaCare), based on those calculations. Have
Dad or Grandma give the bottles while Mom pumps.
